Navigating the NDIS
A helpful guide
The NDIS can open doors to supports that build independence, community participation and progress toward your goals. Getting started does not have to feel overwhelming.
Who can apply?
You generally need to meet age, residency and disability (or early intervention) requirements. The NDIS looks at whether you have a permanent impairment that significantly affects everyday activities. If you are unsure, contact an NDIS partner or the NDIA on 1800 800 110 before applying.
How to apply
- Connect with an NDIS partner for guidance (or contact the NDIA directly).
- Gather evidence from your GP, specialists or allied health professionals showing how your disability affects daily life.
- Complete and submit an Access Request Form with your supporting documents.
- Wait for a decision (the NDIA aims to respond within 21 days of receiving a complete application). If unsuccessful, you can request a review or reapply with stronger evidence.
After approval:
Understanding your plan
Your plan is individualised and should reflect your goals and support needs. Funding can cover daily living, personal care, community participation, skill building, employment supports, Supported Independent Living (SIL) and high-intensity needs.
Funding is managed in one of three ways:
- Self-managed – you handle payments
- Plan-managed – a plan manager handles the admin
- NDIA-managed – you generally use registered providers
Your management type affects which providers you can choose, so understand it early.
Choosing the right provider
Ask questions before you commit:
- Are you a registered NDIS provider?
- Do you deliver the supports I need?
- Are your workers trained and experienced (especially for high-intensity supports)?
- How do you support my choice and control?
- How will you help me work toward my goals?
- How do you handle concerns or communicate with my family/support network?
A good provider centres your dignity, safety, independence and goals, not just rostered hours.
Already have a plan?
Regularly check:
- Are my supports helping me progress?
- Have my circumstances or goals changed?
- Am I using funding effectively?
If your situation changes (new living arrangements, increased support needs, loss of informal supports), contact the NDIS promptly rather than waiting until things become difficult.
You don’t have to do this alone
Start with one clear step: check eligibility, understand your plan, or speak with providers.
