From Structure to Independence: John’s Journey
When John first began receiving support from Best Care Services, everyday activities could feel overwhelming. Going out into the community was difficult. Walking short distances left him exhausted, and he had little confidence in unfamiliar environments. He wasn’t engaging regularly with his family and often found it difficult to manage without structure and routine.
Rather than focusing on what John couldn’t do, his support team focused on understanding how John learns, what motivates him and what he wanted his life to look like.
Building a routine that works for John
One of the first priorities was creating structure.
John now has a visual daily schedule, broken down into manageable steps. His responsibilities are clearly outlined, allowing him to see what needs to be done and tick off what he has completed.
For John, this visual approach has made a real difference. His support team understands that he can become distracted easily, so information is presented in a way that is clear, practical and meaningful to him.
For John, the approach is simple: Work hard. Rest hard.
His interests, including gaming and other activities he enjoys, are incorporated into his routine alongside everyday responsibilities, community participation and skill development. Rather than doing things for John, the focus is on helping him build the skills and confidence to do more for himself.
A healthier lifestyle
John also wanted to make positive changes to his health and wellbeing. When he began his journey, his diet consisted largely of processed foods. Working alongside his support team and dietitian, he began following a more structured and nourishing meal plan.
Over four months, John lost 11 kilograms. But the biggest change hasn’t been the number on the scales.
John has more energy. He is walking further without becoming exhausted, including walking to local bus stops, and has become more willing to get out into his community and try new experiences.
He is also learning to prepare some of his own meals and is beginning to understand the nutritional information behind his food choices.
For someone who enjoys numbers and mathematics, his team has found ways to make this information meaningful to him, helping him understand the why, rather than simply telling him what to do.
Finding his place in the community
One of the most significant changes has been John’s growing confidence socially. He has started attending activities such as board game and Dungeons & Dragons events, giving him opportunities to connect with people who share his interests.
The right support team has also made a difference. John’s support team brings different strengths, personalities and interests. Some team members are closer to John’s age and share his interests in gaming, while others bring different perspectives and mentoring styles. Together, they provide John with a diverse support network that helps him develop different skills and relationships.
He is learning about social cues, communication and navigating group environments, while still being encouraged to be himself.
Reconnecting with family
John’s progress has also helped strengthen important relationships. Previously, he had limited contact with his family. As his family saw John becoming happier, more settled and more confident, those relationships began to strengthen.
Today, his family meets with him regularly and he is part of the family group chat.
He is also developing everyday skills that are helping him build stronger relationships and greater independence, from cooking for others and planning activities to managing money and making decisions.
Recently, John saved his money to buy a meal for his family. It was a simple gesture, but it represented something much bigger: John was beginning to see himself as someone who could contribute.
Developing independence
John is also developing practical skills that will support his future independence. He has learned the locations of three local bus stops and is developing his public transport skills using the TripView app.
He is learning how to budget his money and make deliberate purchasing decisions rather than spending impulsively.
He has already started saving towards a Nintendo Switch of his own. These may seem like small achievements, but they represent important steps towards greater independence, confidence and choice.
Looking towards the future
John’s goals extend well beyond his current routine. Over the next 6–12 months, his team hopes to support him to explore further education and eventually employment.
John has a strong interest in coding and is particularly capable with mathematics. His team is exploring learning environments that better suit the way he processes information, including online study where he can receive appropriate support.
The goal isn’t simply to find something for John to do. It is to help him discover what he is capable of contributing.
The importance of the right environment
Perhaps one of the most meaningful things John has said about his new home is:
“I really love this house, because at my other house I did not feel safe. I finally feel comfortable and safe.”
For John’s team, these words capture what good support should be about. Not changing who someone is. Not expecting everyone to learn, communicate or experience the world in exactly the same way. But creating an environment where a person feels understood, supported and safe enough to learn.
John’s journey has been a team effort involving John, his family, Support Coordinator and his support team.
Each person brings something different. And that is intentional.
John needed people who could understand his interests, communicate clearly, provide structure, encourage independence and, most importantly, see his potential.
Today, he is healthier, more confident, more socially connected and developing skills that are opening up new possibilities for his future.
