Leaving School: What Comes Next for Young People with Disability?
Core Supports available in Sydney and Melbourne

Finishing Year 12 is a major milestone. For young people with disability and their families, it can also bring questions about what comes next.

The transition from school to adult life can open up new possibilities — further education, employment, volunteering, community participation, greater independence or exploring Supported Independent Living (SIL).

But knowing where to start isn’t always easy.

Exploring the next step

There is no single pathway after school. A young person’s next chapter should reflect their interests, abilities, goals and aspirations.

They might want to:

  • Study at TAFE, university or through a vocational course
  • Explore employment or work experience
  • Develop everyday living and independence skills
  • Learn to travel more independently
  • Build social and community connections
  • Explore future living arrangements, including SIL

For some young people, the first step may simply be trying something new and discovering what they enjoy.

How can a disability support provider help?

The right support can make the transition easier by helping a young person turn their goals into practical steps.

A support worker may assist with developing daily living skills, accessing the community, building confidence with transport, preparing for employment or study, and developing greater independence.

For families considering the next stage, a Support Coordinator can also help bring together the right supports and services around the participant’s goals.

Where can families find more information?

If you’re unsure where to begin, there are several useful options.

Attend an NDIS information session

The NDIS Understanding the NDIS: Pathways to Post School Life webinar is designed for NDIS participants, families and carers. It covers post-school pathways, employment preparation, building independence and choosing options that align with a young person’s aspirations, abilities and interests.
